ILGA World seeks a Junior Consultant in the area of: Gender Identity, Expression & Sex Characteristics

Duration: 6 months each

Start of the position: Starting date ideally by 15 February.

Who can apply?

Given the nature of the work, we highly encourage applicants from diverse gender identities and sex characteristics. Applicants from and based in the global south are also highly encouraged to apply.

The main target group for the International Junior Professionals Programme are persons at an early stage of their career who would like to learn more about global advocacy.

We welcome dedication, experience in human rights and social justice, and a particular interest in working on gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics issues.

The junior consultancies in the International Junior Professionals Programme replace ILGA Worlds internship opportunities that we offered in the past.

As an international programme any person may apply except those living in Switzerland.

These are exciting opportunities to join ILGA World, the global LGBTI membership-based organisation with more than 1,700 member organisations in over 160 countries.

The Junior Consultant will assist and report to ILGA World’s GIESC Programme Manager: Dennis van Wanrooij, and will collaborate with other members of the GIESC team on specific projects.

The GIESC programme is an exciting opportunity to engage with the global trans, gender diverse and intersex movements. We anticipate opportunities for travel to conferences and events.

Job description

Tasks and requirements

All candidates should:

have a particular interest in GIESC and anti-gender opposition issues
have experience (paid or unpaid) in NGO work, in community or grassroots organising, advocacy or other activist work, preferably in the LGBTI sector
be well organized, motivated and able to work remotely
have a good internet connection during the Junior Consultancy
have a very good level of written and spoken English

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:

Support the GIESC Programme Manager in strengthening the trans and intersex human rights portfolios of the organisation
Support the GIESC Programme Manager in organising key events such as CSW, Trans Advocacy Week and a global expert meeting on anti-gender opposition
Work with GIESC Programme Manager in developing GIESC-related research and dissemination initiatives
Support trans and intersex rights defenders in engaging with UN mechanisms such as Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, UPR, HRC
Supporting the Programmes Team staff in relation to issues pertaining to gender identity/expression and sex characteristics
Carrying out organisational and administrative tasks together with other UN Programme staff members
Participate in activities related to the Free to be Me strategic partnership funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Specific additional requirements for the Junior Consultant on Gender Identity, Expression and Sex Characteristics:

Candidates ideally should:

be connected to GIESC movement and organisations nationally, regionally or globally
have a good knowledge of intersectional feminist approaches to the promotion of gender justice
have an understanding about how GIESC rights and indigenous people’s rights intersect
have good knowledge on issues pertaining to sex characteristics, and intersex justice
have worked for or volunteered with gender identity/expression and/or intersex led initiatives, groups or organisations

Junior Consultancy conditions

The Junior Consultancies are virtual; no relocation to Geneva is expected or supported by ILGA World
The Junior Consultancies are six months long and require a full-time commitment for their duration (37.5 hours/week), working hours arrangements are flexible
The Junior Professional consultant will be expected to work from their current location
The Junior Professional Consultant will receive a compensation of CHF 750 per month for the duration of the consultancy
The successful Junior Professional Consultants will have opportunities to work with representatives of LGBTI organisations from around the world and other NGOs virtually and/or in Geneva
Due recognition in publications and activities which the Junior Professional Consultants have contributed to will be given.

Our advocacy work is conducted in strong partnership with activists, other human and social rights organisations, staff from permanent missions and UN staff. The successful candidate is somebody who is competent in working with such partners, building, maintaining and nurturing key relationships. Q6. GIESC Communication *

This Junior Consultancy will require you to communicate frequently with trans and intersex activists across the globe. Please draft an e-mail response to an activist that invites them to a training for trans, intersex and gender diverse people on Human Rights Council advocacy.
